Early days in Lee County, AR, are recalled in this spiral bound booklet, conprised of excerpts from the rare 1889 book, Goodspeed's Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Eastern Arkansas, and a product of the WPA, Arkansas, A Guide to the State, published in 1941. The 71-page booklet is printed on 60# paper. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. Our copy of the original Goodspeed book had some insect damage in the Lee County section, rendering a few bios incomplete. The rest of the information, however, we felt was worth reprinting and preserving. All bios mentioned below are complete. The first part of the booklet contains a brief history of the county: a physical description of the county; Early officials; John Murrell, an outlaw; Names of early settlers; Taylor Cotton, a world renowned variety of cotton, and other agricultural products; Climate; Marianna, the county seat and principal town, and Haynes. Besides the names mentioned in the first part of the booklet, there are biographies of many county residents of yesteryear. Most are fairly lengthy, and often include ancestors, previous residences, children, in-laws, affiliations, war records, and business activities.
