Three Years in the Cavalry

Charles Gardner was a member of Company A, First Regiment, Maine Cavalry from December 6th 1861 to December 6th 1864. Between 1909 and 1912 he wrote down his remembrances of that time with the notation that "if it will interest any one I shall be well paid for my trouble." His story was passed down through his family and eventually printed in an 8 1/2 by 5 1/2" 70 page booklet.

From training camp, by train to Washington, sent to the guard house, to Harper's Ferry, into battle where he was injured and captured, taken to a prison camp, and paroled -- and this is just the first half of the booklet!

The booklet is new. It was originally printed in 1998 as part of a limited edition for family members.
