"Mother Bickerdyke" -- Born in Knox County, Ohio, Mary Ann Ball, widow of Robert Bickerdyke, was a noted Civil War nurse who lived much of her life in Kansas. (Vol. VII 1901-1902)

"A Descendant of Freemen" -- Biography of Capt. Edmund Boltwood, who enlisted in Company D, 27th Massachusetts, reenlisted in Troop C, First United States Colored Cavalry, became a peace officer in Franklin County, Kansas, and in 1898 at age 59 served in the Spanish American War in Manila. (Vol. XIII 1913-1914)

"War Incidents of Kansas City" -- Daniel Geary reminisces about life in Kansas City during the Civil War. Geary held several city offices, such as city engineer, city registrar and city clerk. He was a captain and adjutant of the 77th Regiment of Missouri Militia with headquarters in Kansas City. (Vol. XI 1909-1911)

"General Thomas Ewing Jr." -- First Chief Justice of Kansas, Brigadier General and author of General Order No. 11. The article, writen by Major Harrison Hannahs, adjutant to the general during most of his military service, begins with Gen. Ewing recruiting the 11th Kansas Regiment and continues through his resignation from the army. There is also a discussion of the question "Who made the plan of campaign?" referring to Sherman's Atlanta campaign. (Vol. XII 1911-1912)

"Eugene Fitch Ware" -- An example of the "soldier state-maker," Eugene Ware was a member of Company E, First Iowa Infantry, moving to Kansas after the war. From a fist fight that won him a spot in the zouaves company (despite being under-aged), to his experiences in camp and on the battlefield, the article gives a colorful account of Civil War days. Included are many of Ware's personal accounts of his adventures. (Vol. XIII 1913-1914)

"Personal Recollections of the Battle of Shiloh" -- Leander Stillwell, a member of the 61st Illinois Infantry, recalls his own adventures at the Battle of Shiloh. Stillwell moved to Kansas after the Civil War. (Vol. XI 1909-1911)

"Edward Wanshear Wynkoop" -- Wynkoop's son recalls his father's days as a Kansas pioneer and a Major of the First Colorado. There's also interesting tale on the naming of Denver, CO. (Vol. XIII 1913-1914)
