  The excerpt from White's book concerns the development of this area up to its publication date, while excerpts from the WPA book, offer a nostalgic glimpse from a mid-20th Century vantage point, including  historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities.   Among the many and diverse topics included from the older book are: Early Settlers, Physical Features, Agriculture, Industries, Transportation Systems, 1850 Census Extracts, Instances of Longevity; the Cherokee Alphabet, invented by Sequoia (George Guess); DeSoto's travels in Floyd County; Ancient Mounds and a Saltpetre Cave in Bartow County and Wilson's Cave in Walker County; Old Indian Towns; Where names came from; Deaf and Dumb Asylum in Rome; Battle between Whites and Indians in 1793 near Rome; Cave Spring, Medicinal Springs, Catoosa Springs and others; Bio of William Washington Gordon; First Grand Jurors of Gordon County; a Wild Indian Ballgame, and other interesting bits of history and trivia.  Included from the WPA book is a tour following US 41, known as the Dixie Highway, from the Tennessee Line to Allatoona Village.
