reprinted from White's Historical Collections of Georgia, and another hard-to find book: Georgia, a Guide to Its Towns and Countryside, a WPA publication. This booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the three-color front cover.

The excerpt from White's book concerns the development of this area up to its publication date, while excerpts from the WPA book, offer a nostalgic glimpse from a mid-20th Century vantage point, including  historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities.
 
Among the many and diverse topics included from the older book are: Early Settlers, Physical Features, Agriculture, Industries, Transportation Systems, 1850 Census Extracts, Instances of Longevity; the Cherokee Alphabet, invented by Sequoia (George Guess); DeSoto's travels in Floyd County; Ancient Mounds and a Saltpetre Cave in Bartow County and Wilson's Cave in Walker County; Old Indian Towns; Where names came from; Deaf and Dumb Asylum in Rome; Battle between Whites and Indians in 1793 near Rome; Cave Spring, Medicinal Springs, Catoosa Springs and others; Bio of William Washington Gordon; First Grand Jurors of Gordon County; a Wild Indian Ballgame, and other interesting bits of history and trivia. 
Included from the WPA book is a tour following US 41, known as the Dixie Highway, from the Tennessee Line to Allatoona Village. This includes the towns of Ringgold, Tunnel Hill, Dalton (which is in Whitefield County), Resaca, the Oostanaula River, a Statue of Sequoyah, Calhoun, Adairsville, Barnsley Gardens, Cartersville, Friendship Monument (a tribute to "friends and creditors"), Allatoona Dam and Reservoir, Valley View and In The Valley estates, Corra Harris Memorial Chapel (honoring the authoress), Etowah River and Emerson; a tour following US 27 through LaFayette, Trion, Summerville, Berry Schools including Martha Berry School for Girls and Mount Berry School for Boys, the Battey State Hospital, the industrial city of Rome (including action during the War Between the States and Floods, City Clock Tower, the Capitoline Wolf -- a gift from Mussolini, St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Chieftains, Shorter College, Myrtle Hill Cemetery, the Agate Demonstration Project), and Lindale.
