Greene~Morgan~Oconee Oglethorpe~Taliferro    Early days in five Georgia counties are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW  31 Page Spiral-bound Booklet reprinted from White's Historical Collections of Georgia, and another hard-to find book: Georgia, a Guide to Its Towns and Countryside, a WPA publication. This booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the three-color front cover.   Only four of the counties were included in White's 1854 book: Greene, Morgan, Oglethorpe and Taliferro. The fifth, Oconee wasn't formed until 1875, when it was taken from Clarke County.   Past and/or present area communities include:  (Some of these are not named in the booklet. *County Seat )

The excerpt from White's book concerns the development of this area up to its publication date, while excerpts from the WPA book, offer a nostalgic glimpse from a mid-20th Century vantage point, including  historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities.   Among the many and diverse topics from the older book are: Early Settlers; Physical Features; Agriculture; Industries, including the Madison Steam Mill Company, Scull Shoals Mfg.  Co, and others:Educational Facilities; Churches; 1850 Census Extracts; Instances of Longevity; Early Grand Jurors; several Indian confrontations; Prominent Citizens, including the Alexander Stephens family, Congressman William C. Dawson (picture), Secretary of the Treasury William Harris Crawford, and others; Muster-Roll of a Greene County Regiment; an early school teacher with odd ideas, and other bits of history and trivia.   

The WPA book is mentions the Lumpkin House, the Presbyterian Church in Lexington, and the George Gilmer home; Crawford; Cherokee Corner; the Southern Piedmont Conservation Experiement Station, the Eagle Hotel in Watkinsville; the Burney Home, Snowhill and the Braswell Monument in Madison; Alexander H. Stephens Memorial State Park and Liberty Hall in Crawfordville; Jefferson Hall; Buffalo Lick; Union Point; Hawthorn Heights; Redman Thornton House; Bethesda Baptist Church; Mercer Institute in Penfield; Cobb-Dawson House in Greensboro; Greene County Courthouse and more.
