Early days in Liberty County, GA, (formerly
St. John's Parish) including
the present and/or past communities of Dorchester,
Flemington, Fort Stewart, Gumbranch, Hinesville, Midway, Riceboro
(Richborough), Sunbury, and Walthourville,
are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data
in this spiral bound booklet reprinted from
two rare books: the Rev. George White's Historical
Collections of Georgia and Georgia, a Guide to Its Towns
and Countryside, a WPA publication. The booklet
is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged for
easier reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the three-color
front cover.
The
excerpt from White's book covers the development of this area until its
publication date of 1854, while excerpts from the WPA book,
give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting
historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities.
Among
the many and diverse topics in the booklet are:
Sunbury, site of
a Revolutionary War fort; 1850 Census statistics; Movement of congregation
from Europe to New England to Carolina to Georgia (1630-1752); Names
of Early Settlers; Extracts from Medway Church concerning Indian
troubles, the building of a fort; French privateers, etc.; history
of the church -- its buildings and its pastors; independent
support for the Revolution leading to county's name change; Revolutionary
skirmishes and incidents and correspondence pertaining to such; More
Indian troubles; a letter from President Washington; the first
Superior Court held in Liberty County (1783) with names of grand
jurors; brief bios of Rev William McWhir, Rev. Moses Allen, Benjamin
Baker, and others, and a look at Major John Jones's exciting adventures
and letters to his wife during the American Revolution; a reward
for Robert Sallette's head and other colorful tales of this patriot;
Site of the Hermitage, Silk Hope Plantation; Barbour Lathrop Plant
Introduction Garden; Ways, a model community developed by Henry
Ford; Site of the King's Ferry Revolutionary Engagement; Freedmen's
