Early days in Grant
County, IN, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and
factual data in this new 8.5" x 11" spiral-bound booklet, printed
on 60# opaque paper. The booklet is reprinted from A Century
of Development, Grant County, Indiana, compiled by the Grant
County Junior Historical Society in 1937. To this we have added
excerpts from Indiana, a Guide to the Hoosier State,a product
of the WPA Writer's Program during the late 1930s.
Some of the many
subjects discussed are: the
Battle of Mississinewa, Frances Slocum, Meshingomesia, the City
of Marion, Historical and Scenic sites, Organization of the county,
the Townships, the Courthouse and Jail, Education, Religion, Medicine,
Law, Famous Sons of Grant County, including Thomas Riley Marshall,
Joaquin Miller, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, David Lewis Payne (the
original Oklahoma Boomer), Caleb B. Smith, Major George W. Steele,
Capt. George W. Steele, M.Clifford Townsend, Willis Van Devanter,
Milton Wright, father of the Wright Brothers, and others; Builders
of the county, including the Goldthwaite family, William Lomax,
the Samuel McClure family, Col. John Lewis McCulloch, Phillip Matter,
the James S. Shively family, the Jacob Spencer family, the James
Sweetser family, George Webster family, and Jason Willson; Archeology;
the Veterans Administration Hospital; Industry; Transportation;
Military History; Underground Railroad, Knights of the Golden Circle,
the York Inn, the Block House, Agriculture, and a list of "firsts"
in the county. There is also a partial list
of the cemeteries of Grant County with the names of the first person
buried in each.
Unlike most of our
booklets, an index is included.
Pictures include
General Francis Marion, Willis Van Devanter, the Marion High School
building, Chief Meshingomesia, an aerial view of Marion, maps, the
marker in the courthouse yard, Samuel McClure Sr., the Horace Mann
Grade building and a few others.
The
section from the WPA book briefly visits

and Gas City, Upland and Lake Galatia.
