Early days in Vigo
County, IN, are recalled in this new 47-page booklet, comprised
of excerpts from several rare writings, including: An Illustrated
History of the State of Indiana: Being a full and authentic Civil
and Political History of the State from its First Exploration down
to 1875. (There's 51 more words to the sub-title, but you'll
have to buy the booklet to see the rest!) The original book was
written by DeWitt C. Goodrich and Charles R. Tuttle and published
by Richard S. Peale & Company of Indianapolis in 1875. This
booklet includes only that portion of history and biographies pertaining
to Vigo County.
Other excerpts are
from Indiana, a Guide to the Hoosier State, a WPA publication
from the late 1930s, and Historic and Educational Information
About Vigo County and Terre Haute, Indiana, published in 1926.
The spiral bound
booklet is 8 1/2 x 11" and is printed on 60# paper. A vinyl
sheet protects the front cover.
Among the subjects
from the 1875 book are: Fort
Harrison following the War of 1812; Early settlers at the fort;
Early residents of Terre Haute, a Drought that resulted in many
deaths; Organization of the county and the city; Condition of the
city in 1875; and the State Normal School. Individual Biographies
which often shed light on the area and times as well as providing
specific genealogical data, are included for:
Col. Francis Vigo, Zenas Smith, Judge Thomas
B. Long, David S. Sanaldson, Richard Thompson, and Thomas Dowling.
The WPA excerpt
includes a special section on Terre Houte. Besides a brief history
of the city, it includes a small city map with 18 points of interest;
and mentions a number of other places, including Seelyville, Bowling
Green, Riley, New Goshen, Shirkieville, Turkey Run State Park,
Rockville, North Terre Haute, and Fairbanks. Another excerpt from
this book discusses writers from Vigo County, including Theodore
Dreiser and James Whitcomb Riley. A poem of Riley's called "Regardin'
Terry Hut" is included.
The 1926 history
was in honor of a visit from the George Rogers Clark Sesqui-Centennial
Commissions visit. It includes bios of Clark, Presidents Zachary
Taylor and William Henry Harrison, the Rev. Father Peter Gibault,
Col. Francis Vigo and Chauncey Rose. Maps of early Indiana, and
an 1816 plat map of Terry Haute are included, along with information
