Yellow Medicine County are recalled in this spiral bound booklet
reprinted from the rare 1882 book: History of the Minnesota Valley,
by the Rev. Edward D. Neill. The booklet is printed one-sided on
60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet
has been added to protect the front cover.
The booklet contains
information on the following villages and/or townships of: Yellow
Medicine City, Granite Falls, Minnesota Falls, Stony Run, Echo (formerly
Empire), Sandes, Lisbon, Wood Lake, Norman, Canby, Hazel Run, Swede
Prairie, Friendship, Florida, Wergeland, Posen, Burton, Tyro, Omro,
Fortier.
Among the many subjects discussed
are: Upper Sioux Agency,
Battle of Wood Lake, Physical Features of the area; Early county
officials; First Permanent Settlers after the Sioux War; County
Seat disagreement; County Records in a haystack; County and/or
community "firsts," such as the first court session,
first marriage, first sawmill, first house, etc.; Railroads and
bridges; the Granite Falls Journal; Churches and Schools; Early
public officials; County Courthouse; Early Banks and Businesses;
Organizations, such as the Masons; and other bits of history and
trivia. There are mini biographies of prominent residents (such
as H.T. Goodnough, a Civil War drummer boy, Gorham Powers, 2nd
Lt. in a colored regiment in the Civil War, and S.A. Hall, who
captained the 5th Wisconsin), as well as many other names throughout
the booklet.
