New! 75 Page Illustrated Booklet

Early days in Cumberland County and Harnett County in the coastal region of North Carolina, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this new 75-page spiral-bound booklet, comprised of excerpts from four vintage books. These source materials include John Hill Wheeler's Historical Sketches of North Carolina (1851); Sketches of Prominent Living North Carolinians by Jerome Dowd (1888), North Carolina, A Guide to the Old North State (1939), a product of the WPA; A New Geography of North Carolina (1954-65).

The tri-color front cover is printed on 80# card stock and has been protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is printed single-sided on 60# opaque paper, with the print enlarged to fit the 8.5" x 11" paper and improve readability.

Among the places mentioned in the booklet are: Cumberland County -- Fayetteville (county seat), Fort Bragg, Pope Air Force Base, Hope Mills, Manchester, Spring Lake, Stedman, Vander, Linden, Wade, and Godwin; Harnett County -- Lillington (county seat), Dunn, Erwin, Augier, Coats, Olivia, Bunnlevel, Mamers, Johnsonville, and Spout Springs.

Among the many subjects included are: The United States Arsenal; a document, similar to the Mecklenburg Resolves, listing early patriots; the romantic history of Flora MacDonald; early notable residents -- Farquard Campbell, William Duffy, John Louis Taylor, Henry Potter, John D. The Dowd excerpt includes bios of Wharton J. Green, James C. MacRae, George M. Rose and Ralph P. Buxton. The WPA section offers a nostalgic glimpse of the area from a 1939 vantage point, offering historical notes and sightseeing possibilities. It includes a separate section on Fayetteville, with a map and 21 points of interest.
