Early days in Davidson
County, North Carolina, are recalled in this new
illustrated 43-page spiral-bound booklet, comprised of excerpts
from several vintage books. These source materials include John
Hill Wheeler's Historical Sketches of North Carolina (1851);
Sketches of Prominent Living North Carolinians by Jerome
Dowd (1888), North Carolina, A Guide to the Old North State
(1939), a product of the WPA; A New Geography of North Carolina
(1954-65), and Centennial History of Davidson County North Carlina
by Rev. Jacob Calvin Leonard (1927).
The
tri-color front cover is printed on 80# card stock and has been
protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is printed single-sided on
60# opaque paper, with the print enlarged to fit the 8.5" x
11" paper and improve readability.
Some of the places
mentioned in the booklet include:
Lexington (County Seat), Denton, Lexington, Thomasville, Healing
Springs, Eller, Pilot, Jackson Hill, Tyro, Churchland, Midway, Acadia,
Welcome, and Wallburg.
Among the many subjects
included are: Geology and
Physical features, such as The Trading Path, the Jersey Bottoms,
; Members of the General Assembly from Davidson County before 1851;
Early notables -- John Lederer, James Needham, Rev. Samuel Suther,
Capt. Benjamin Merrill, George Coble, Valentin Leonardt, Wooldrich
Fritz, and others; two early descriptions; Indian tribes; Thomasville
furniture; Schools, including Yadkin College, ; Two Rival Cities;
Boone's Cabin and Caves; a visit George Washington, one very large
chair, Big Henry Shoaf, strong man of Davidson Co., where some place
names came from, Buffalo Bill's train crash, and other curious bits
of history and trivia.
Leonard's
excerpt is filled with names, including a roster of men from Davidson
County who served in the Conferate Army. It also includes a section
on the family of Daniel Boone, a section on General Nathaniel Greene,
and a report on the Ghosts of Abbott's Creek.
The Dowd excerpts
are biographies of James Madison Leach and Rev. Liryum Skidmore
Burkhead. The WPA section offers a nostalgic glimpse of the area
from a 1939 vantage point, offering many historical notes and sightseeing
possibilities.
