ALLEN COUNTY, OHIO

BOOKLET / PRINTS

Early days in Allen County, including the communities of Lima, Delphos, Bluffton, and Spencerville, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 20 page booklet reprinted from the 1892 Centennial edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio, The Ohio Guide, and other hard-to-find sources. The spiral-bound booklet is one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged 10% for easier reading.
IN ADDITION TO THE BOOKLET the buyer
will receive THREE computer-enhanced 8 1/2 x 11 prints of engravings from the original Howe book, suitable for framing. These include the street scene of Lima shown below, Lima in 1887 and a Field of Oil Derricks.
Among the many fascinating topics covered in the booklet are: early pioneers like the Ridenours, the Woods, the Bowers, the Russells and the McClures, early Indians like Quilna and Hai-Aitch-Tah, the settlement of Lima, how the Hog River got its name, the development of the oil industry and the Black Swamp Mutiny.

GENEALOGY BUFFS will find a list of 1888 county officials and businesses. A 1933 look at the history of newspapers in the County, brief articles on the Ohio and Erie Canal and Bluffton College, points of interest from the hard-to-find 1940 WPA writer's project, and maps showing the 88 Ohio counties and 1805 Ohio are also included.
