1892 Centennial edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio,
The Ohio Guide (a 1940 WPA Writers project), and other hard-to-find
sources. The spiral-bound booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper
with the fine print enlarged for easier reading.

8 1/2 x 11 Prints of engravings from the original Howe
book, suitable for framing. They include the sketch of 1846 Findlay shown
below, a photo of Findlay taken in 1890, and an Ohio oil field in winter.
Among the many and diverse topics covered in
the booklet are: Fort Findlay, built during the war of 1812, Gen. James
Findlay, Wilson Vance, the first white settler, Blanchard's Fork, the good
Count Coffinberry, Dr. Charles Oesterlen - the "gas fool," the great Karg
well, the sight, sound and smell of a burning well, speculation in the gas
belt, and the Great Natural Gas Jubilee of 1887 with 40,000 attendees.
GENEALOGY BUFFS will find
a list of 1888
county officers and businesses. The Howe history covers the development
of this area until about 1890, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic
glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes,
especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. A 1933 look at the
history of newspapers in the county, a map showing the 88 Ohio counties
and a map of 1805 Ohio are also included.
