are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this
NEW 26 page booklet
reprinted from the 1892 Centennial edition of Henry Howe's Historical
Collections of Ohio, The Ohio Guide (a WPA Writers Project), and
other hard-to-find sources. The spiral bound booklet is printed single-sided
on 60# paper, with the fine print enlarged for easier reading.
IN ADDITION TO the booklet, the buyer will receive THREE Computer-Enhanced 8 1/2 x 11 Prints made from engravings in the original book, suitable for framing.
They include the view at the Coal Mines in Shanee; St. Joseph's Church and
Convent in 1846, near Somerset; and a central View in Somerset in 1846.
Among the many and diverse topics covered
in the booklet are: Coal and Iron; St. Joseph's, the oldest Catholic church
in Ohio; Academy of St. Mary of the Springs; Muster Day with Free Fights;
Phil Sheridan's Boyhood, Homestead, Mother, and Life; and the History of
the Poem "Sheridan's Ride". GENEALOGY BUFFS will find a list of 1888 county officers and businesses, and
biographies on Januarius Aloysius MacGahan, Bulgaria's Liberator, Gen. James
M. Comly, journalist, and Oliver Hazard Perry.
The Howe history covers the development of this
area until about 1890, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic
glimpse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes,
especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. A 1933 look at the
history of newspapers in the county, articles from a 1941 history on Januarius
Aloysius MacGahan, the Old Toll Gate, the Shrine of St. Joseph, and Jeremiah
M. Rusk, map showing the 88 Ohio counties and a map of 1805 Ohio are also
included.
