Early days in Haywood
County, TN, are recalled through colorful tales, factual
data and individual biographies in this 48-page
spiral bound booklet comprised of excerpts from three vintage publications:
the rare 1887 book: History of Tennessee, originally published
by Goodspeed Publishing Co., and Counties of Tennessee by
Austin Foster, 1923, and Tennessee, a Guide to the State,
a 1939 product of the WPA. The booklet is printed on 60# paper.
A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover.
Subjects include:
a physical description of the county, early settlers, beginning
with Col. Richard Nixon in 1821, early mills, rapid settlement,
agriculture, formation of the county, early judges and county officials,
first court house, jail and poor asylum, railroad, lawyers, military
affairs including Confederate units -- the Haywood Rifles, Campany
L, Ninth Tennessee Infantry, Company M, Seventh Tennessee Cavalry,
the Haywood Blues -- and a small company of federal troops, the
county seat -- Brownsville, early physicians, the rise and fall
of prosperity, names of businesses, the Phoenix newspaper, schools,
including several female colleges, churches, and the towns of Stanton,
Woodville and Brooklyn.
