Early days
in Lauderdale County in the West Tennessee,
are recalled in this spiral bound booklet compiled from excerpts
from the 1886 book: History of Tennessee, originally published
by Goodspeed Publishing Co., and other sources. The 62-page booklet
is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier
reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover.
Subjects include:
Physical features, such as
the Mississippi River; Early settlers, such as Henry and John Rutherford;
Land grants; Early mills and other enterprises; Organization of
the county and boundary changes; County buildings; Transportation;
County officials; Crops; Civil War units from county; the celebrated
Confederate Fort Pillow; the town of Ripley, the county seat; Fulton,
the oldest town; Durhamville; Ashport, a town that wash into the
river; Henning, rebuilt from ashes; Gates, Hall's Station, and other
towns; Education (or the lack of it), Early teachers; Memories of
early churces from William Turner, a pioneer.
Besides
the names mentioned in the first part of the booklet, there are
biographies of many county residents of yesteryear. Most are fairly
lengthy, and often include ancestors, previous residences, children,
in-laws, affiliations, war records, and business activities. In
the course of this they often shed light on the early businesses,
