New 76-Page Booklet

Early days in Stewart County in Middle Tennessee are recalled in this spiral bound booklet compiled from excerpts from: History of Tennessee, originally published in 1886 by Goodspeed Publishing Co., Counties of Tennessee by Austin P. Foster (1923), and Tennessee, a Guide to the State, a 1939 Federal Writer's Project of the WPA. The new 76-page booklet is printed on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover.

Among the subjects included are: Minerals and blast furnaces for iron; Early Settlers, mostly from North Carolina (many names); Hostile Indians, wild animals, lack of mills and other early difficulties; Early mills, stills and cotton-gins; six freedom-seeking slaves hung in the 1850s; Large slave-holders; Doctors; Act creating the county; Early court procedures ("Andrew and John Hutchinson were fined $5 each for playing cards with a negro"), including several interesting murder cases; Early county buildings; Names of county court clerks between 1804 and 1886;Names of judges and lawyers; Military history, including the militia, the War of 1812 and the Civil War; Forts Henry and Donelson in Stewart County; Dover, the county seat; Businesses, Newspapers; Cumberland City, Tobacco Port, Indian Mound; Schools; Churches; Fort Donelson National Military Park; Fort Donelson Museum and other items of interest.

Besides the names mentioned in the first part of the booklet, there are a number of biographies. Most are fairly lengthy, and often include ancestors, previous residences, children, in-laws, affiliations, war records, and business activities.
