History of

wWilliamson County, Tennessee

New 88-Page Booklet

Early days in Williamson County, in the heart of Middle Tennessee, are recalled in this spiral bound booklet compiled from excerpts from the 1886 book: History of Tennessee, originally published by Goodspeed Publishing Co., Counties of Tennessee by Austin P. Foster, and Tennessee, a Guide to the State, compiled and written by the Federal Writer's Project of the WPA in 1939. The 88-page booklet is printed on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover.

Among the subjects included are: Geography, including waterways, agriculture, etc.; Early settlers ; the establishment of the county and of the county seat, Franklin; county buildings and officials; roads and railroads; Academies; schools and churches; militia companies before the Civil War; lawyers, juries and courts; court cases and punishments (including ten lashes on the bare back for stealing five cents); the Seminole War; Civil War times -- military units and leaders, and the battle between forces of Gen. John Hood and Gen. Schofield at Franklin; Peytonsville; Thompson Station; early businesses, banks, lodges, etc; historic homes in the area, and other items of interest.

Besides the names mentioned in the first part of the booklet, there are a number of biographies. Most are fairly lengthy, and often include ancestors, previous residences, children, in-laws, affiliations, war records, and business activities. In the course of this they often shed light on the early businesses, professions and institutions in the county. The biographies include: William E. Alexander, S. Anderson, Rev.
