West Virginia is unique among her sister states in that she is the only one formed by breaking from an existing state. In compiling our Virginia sources from Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Virginia (1945), we discovered a number of counties were missing from our Virginia map. We realized these counties form West Virginia, made up of the portion of Virginia that chose not to secede from the union at the begining of the Civil War. Our West Virginia books
contain material also contain informations from the 1928 book titled West
Virginia in History, Life, Literature and Industry by Morris Purdy
Shawkey; History
of West Virginia by Virgil Lewis in 1889 and West Virginia, A Guide
to the Mountain State by the WPA in 1941. |
